May 2nd, 2010

There are lots of utilities to recover deleted files, but what if you can’t boot up your computer, or the whole drive has been formatted? We’ll show you some tools that will dig deep and recover the most elusive deleted files, or even whole hard drive partitions.

We’ve shown you simple ways to recover accidentally deleted files, even a simple method that can be done from an Ubuntu Live CD, but for hard disks that have been heavily corrupted, those methods aren’t going to cut it. In this article, we’ll examine four tools that can recover data from the most messed up hard drives, regardless of whether they were formatted for a Windows, Linux, or Mac computer, or even if the partition table is wiped out entirely.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 Content-Aware Fill is Amazing

May 2nd, 2010

I just watched a sneak peak of a new feature in Adobe Photoshop CS5 due to be released in a couple of weeks – Content-Aware Fill!

It is mind blowing at what it can do!

Don’t take my word for it and check out this video!

If this is anything short of amazing, what is? Especially I was thoroughly impressed at how it filled out the panorama image.

Tip #1 – How to Make Screenshots on iPhone

September 13th, 2009

I’ve noted several times that iPhone is an easy to use device. However, sometimes, cool iPhone functions are difficult to discover. But once you’ve discovered a specific function, you’d love using it. Beginning from firmware 2.x, making screenshots on iPhone has become extremely easy. As a matter of fact, I have not seen making screenshots to be easier on any other device. The best of all, you won’t need a special application. The functionality is built in your iPhone. So, let’s start.

I assume that you’ve already opened an application that you’d like to make a screenshot of.

Now, simply press and hold the Home button (shall I mention that this a button at center bottom of the iPhone?), then press and release the Sleep/Wake button (the one on top right of the iPhone).

Your iPhone will flash briefly and the screenshot will be added to your camera roll.

You can now open the Photo application and view the screenshot there.

That’s it!

Multi-touch tab switching in Firefox!

July 2nd, 2009

Did you know you can switch tabs in Firefox by making a twisting motion with your fingers on a multi-touch surface? I did. Turns out I’ve been doing it for months — I thought I was late to the party and was too ashamed to mention it to anybody for fear of an epic internet ribbing (”What, you just figured that out?”). But no, apparently it was top secret and highly experimental. That was in the beta, though; it looks like the official version has reduced it to a hack. Fortunately, mastering this multi-touch-enabling technique will allow you to tweak your gestures, resulting in everlasting glory.

  • Simply open a new tab (I’ll wait) —
  • Put “about:config” in the address bar, no quotes. It’ll ask you if you’re sure. Yes, you are. You are okay.
  • Ready? Okay, now type “twist” into the search box.
  • Double-click on the twist right, and put “Browser:NextTab” into the box, without the quotes.
  • Theeen, in twist left, put “Browser:PrevTab” without the quotes.
  • You’re done! Now, I found the gesture (it applies immediately, try putting one finger down and rotating another around it) to be a bit slow to respond, so I changed that other setting, the threshold one, from its default (25) to 10. You can mess around and figure out what’s best for you.

See, tweaking is easy! If you’re afraid you’ve ruined something, just right-click (or “context menu click”) on any box you’ve modified and hit reset.

Curiosity piqued? Type “gesture” into the search box and try modifying a few of those settings. I don’t particularly like the twist, so I’m about to set tab switching to three-fingered swipes. Aren’t we just having so much fun?

Email Security Tips

May 8th, 2009

The major component used for fraud, the spreading of malicious data and scams, is email. The following tips below will help safe guard you from being the next victim.

Opening Suspicious Email Attachments.

Many viruses are sent in email attachments. You shouldn’t open any attachments that can be executed by the computer (known as executables), i.e. pif, exe, com, vbs, scr, inf. Treat all attachments as enemies, until proven otherwise. There are other suspicious extensions, and in particular some viruses hide themselves in a sort of double extension, like “.jpg.exe”.  Some antivirus apps can detect these “double” extension attachments if they are configured to do so.

If you insist on opening an attachment, store it first to a folder named something like “Email attachments to scan”, and then scan it with your antivirus software BEFORE opening it.

Even if the attachment is from a friend, scan it FIRST. And definitely DON’T open an attachment from someone you don’t know – delete the entire email.
